PBL in Technical Writing and Presentation course, HUST

Course overview

The course aims to provide students principles and skills of writing scientific and technical documents and making effective presentations. Students are introduced to the entire writing process including planning, drafting, evaluation, and editing. The problems of analyzing the objectives of the text, organizing information, using graphical support tools are also introduced. As a result, students can write technical reports, theses, abstracts, proposals, CVs, etc. in a correct and professional way. In addition, effective presentation techniques such as using voices, changes of tone, body languages are also introduced in this course. During the course, students will work in groups to formulate ideas and prepare the necessary materials for the writing and presentation, thereby training teamwork skills and positive working attitudes.

Participants in piloting 

The course Technical Writing and Presentation is obligatory for the 3rd year of undergraduate student in all major at the School of Information and Communication Technology, Hanoi University of Science and Technology. This is an example of the course for talented engineers in information technology and communication, the first semester of 2020. The class consists of 20 students. The course applied problem-based learning method.

Use of ALIEN services and tools 

Students learn according to PBL and Active Learning method.

The content of the course consists of 2 parts: Presentation and Writing, each part lasts 7 weeks. In each part, students choose a topic from the list of topics given by the teacher, for example:  Computer Graphics, Data base & DBMS, Security, Computer Ethics, AI, IOT, The Fourth Industrial Innovation, Data Science, Digital Transformation. Students search for documents, explore content, prepare slides. Ather that, the class is divided into small groups of 5 – 7 students. Each student presents his/her result to the groups then gets comments and evaluations of all group members.

During the course, students will be assisted by teachers and teaching assistants to improve their skills of presentation as well as writing technical documents.

Erasmus + ALIEN Project supports equipment for PBL classrooms including projectors, screens, TV Monitors, laptops, Audio system.
