4th ALIEN consortium meeting and instructor training event in Hanoi, Vietnam, 4-6 December 2019

The 4th consortium meeting of project ALIEN took place at the University of Hanoi in Vietnam on December 4-6, 2019. The meeting was attended by all academic partners from Asia and Europe. Issues related to the operation of the new laboratories as well as the pilot use of digital research project services in learning processes were discussed.

After completion of the meeting, the consortium organized a training event for educators. The purpose of the event was to build skills on integrating problem-solving activities in the classroom. Approximately 20 individuals participated from Vietnam. In addition, the event was attended by partners from Pakistan and from Greece. During the event the audience built spaghetti bridges. The winning bridge was the one that held the most weight, which was over 30 kilos. The audience particularly enjoyed the event, developing ideas on how to be promote problem-based learning in higher education.

1st Instructor training  event in UTH, 26 November, 2019

On Tuesday, 26 November, 2019, the first Instructor Training Event organized by University of Thessaly (UTH), took place at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The ALIEN project was presented to 9 instructors who teach in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and 2 PhD candidates who participated in the instructor training event. The attendants were presented the problem-based learning methodology as well as the objectives and activities of the project on promoting the adoption of problem-based learning as a strategic educational approach in higher education.

     

     

 

Transnational skype event between the University of Thessaly and the University of Malaya, October 16, 2019

On October 16, 2019 a skype event took place between the University of Thessaly and the University of Malaya. The purpose of the event was to familiarize University of Thessaly students with the ALIEN project activities and objectives on promoting problem based learning. The event further aimed at familiarizing the University of Thessaly students with the physical lab that the University of Malaya has built through the ALIEN project. While there were some technical issues related to the sound, the University of Thessaly students benefitted from understanding the added value of international collaboration, while they also had a view of the lab. 1st Instructor training event in UNITEN, September 3-4, 2019

A two-day workshop on active learning (AL) entitled “Workshop on 21st Century For Engaging Millennials, Part 1: Effective Implementations of Active Learning” was held on 3-4 September 2019 and organized by Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). The project was presented to 32 lecturers form four different colleges that attended the training activity. This workshop was facilitated by Prof. Dr. Khairiyah Mohd Yusof and Dr. Syed Ahmad Helmi Syed Hassan from Centre for Engineering Education, UTM. Among the modules covered were introduction to student-centred teaching and learning, bookends instructional design and informal cooperative learning structures, and designing and planning an aligned course using AL.

     

     

 

Project ALIEN 3rd consortium meeting, Porto, Portugal, June 17-19, 2019

The 3rd consortium meeting was held in Porto, Portugal on 17-19 June 2019 and was organized by Porto Polytechnic. The meeting was opened by the President of Porto Polytechnic, Prof. Joao Roha and Prof. Isabel Praca of the School of the Engineering of Porto Polytechnic. The partners worked on the institutional strategies for introducing active and problem based learning into higher education. They further worked on the ALIEN digital platform for active and problem based learning as well as made plans for instructor training and the formation of special interest groups towards promoting the adoption of project outcomes at their institutions and beyond.

Project ALIEN 2nd consortium meeting, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, January 9-11, 2019

The 2nd Consortium meeting was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 9-11 January 2019 and was organized by the University of Malaya. The work of the meeting was opened by the Vice Rector of the University of Malaya Prof. Dr. Kamila Ghazali and the Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science of the University of Malaya, Prof. Dr. Abrizah Abdullah. Invited speaker Prof. Dr. Aishah Abu Bakar analyzed the benefits of active learning in engineering education.

ALIEN at the Thessaly Science Festival, Larissa, Greece, October 11-12, 2018

The Thessaly Science Festival was organized by the University of Thessaly for celebrating the 30 years since its inception. The event was attended over 2 days by more than 1.500 school children in the mornings, while more individuals attended in the evenings and on Saturday. The ALIEN project was promoted to the participants of the event, project objectives were discussed, and leaflets were distributed. See more

Project ALIEN kickoff meeting, Volos, Greece, June 20-22, 2018

The project kickoff meeting was held in Volos, Greece. Approximately 40 delegates participates from all partners. During the 3 day event the partners had the opportunity to meet each other, discuss the project implementation in the long term as well as set short term implementation goals, and participate in social activities.
