PBL in Network Management course, HUST

Course overview

Network management remains the least understood aspect of networking. Managers of today’s enterprise and carrier networks face great challenges, as they need to manage a variety of devices, protocols and mechanisms, to meet a diverse set of goals in performance, security, availability and costs. The course provides students with a comprehensive view of the network management problem, including its concepts, scope, challenges, techniques and related tools. We will study the network management concepts in concrete applications and scenarios such as MPLS, VPN, VLAN, etc.  The course furthermore focuses on how practical network management can contribute, in combination with pedagogical models, towards the development of basic, transversal skills including analytical thinking, critical thinking, entrepreneurial thinking, problem solving, ability to work in a team, etc.

Use of ALIEN services and tools

During Network Management, students were exposed to active and problem-based learning as project-assignment for mid-term credits. In the beginning, the lecturers will provide a set of project assignment for selection. The students are randomly formed a group  and each group will be assigned with a network management scenario problem. For each scenario, students described network management funtional block, its objectives, and the tools expected to be developed/ or used in order to archive educational goals. Finally, they have to make a presentation and show the simulation of the tools they are using. More specifically, they have to do one of the following taskes

  • Analysis of network company and the requirements
  • Designing the fundamental of network infrastructure and services for operation
  • Designing the network security tools and services
  • Integrating tools for monitoring services and Internet bandwidth
  • Monitoring network management according to funtional blocks of network management
  • Reporting
  • Web-based user interface

Students worked in teams and delivered the presentations in the class. To complete their work, students were challenged to deploy a simulation of network senario for understanding how network management can be applied in practice in relation to specific educational objectives ant themes, designing a network management solution that involved up-to-date techniques and tools for enriching student experiences and contributing to the achievement of learning goals, and proposing methods for validating the scaffolding of knowledge.

The active learning activities allow students to engage in practical application of up-to-date techniques and tools to be used in actual network management contexts, helping link education to needs in the real world problem.
