PBL in Computer-aided Measurement course, TUG

Course overview

The main objective of the course is to provide students with first-hand knowledge of the fundamentals of computer-aided measurement techniques, joint measurements and data acquisition, off-line processing of recorded data and report preparation. The students are also introduced to advanced computer-aided measuring systems (CAMS).

Participants in piloting

The course is fundamental for mechanical engineering students and enrolled 120 students in the 2nd year of undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Mechanical and Precision Engineering. The course is mandatory in the formal curriculum of the Department of Mechanical and Precision Engineering of the Technical University of Gabrovo.

Use of ALIEN services and tools

During the course of CNC Tools, Machines and Technologies, students were exposed to active and problem-based learning in the contexts of a team project “ANALYZING THE TEMPERATURE INFLUENCE UPON MEASURING THE DIAMETER OF CYLINDRICAL OPENING”, which was done during their lab practice.

Three teams were organized to do 20 measurements each in 3 relevant sections of the openings by using an inside-diameter measuring instrument – a Pasimeter. Each team constructed a histogram of the distribution by using Microsoft Excel and presented it to the group.

The active learning activities allowed students to better understand how to operate with a Pasimeter and how to use Microsoft Excel in their future industrial setting. Furthermore, they were able to analyze data and compare results. They also improved their team work, analytical skills and critical thinking, communication and presentation skills.
